Level 2 CPR and AED

This is an Ofqual Regulated Qualification and is based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Skills for Health Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications.

Description

People suffering an ‘Out-of-Hospital’ Cardiac Arrest in the UK stand a 5% chance of survival, compared up to 75% for those in some other countries.  If a casualty has gone into Cardiac Arrest time is of the essence and a controlled electric shock to the heart could make all the difference. Many businesses are now choosing to purchase AED machines as part of their First Aid equipment. The quicker defibrillation is applied and combined with good CPR, the higher the chances of survival.  During this half day course, Learners will develop the skills and knowledge required to recognise a Cardiac Arrest and treat it using effective CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  We are able to train you using a variety of AED training devices and wherever possible will endeavour to use makes and models you are most familiar with in your own workplace.  Oxygen therapy can also be included if this is relevant to your workplace environment. Successful Learners will receive a Level 2 award in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & Automated External Defibrillation.

A similar course is also available for individuals – see BLS & Defibrillator Training.

Syllabus

Successful Learners will be able to:

  • Understand basic life support requirements
  • Demonstrate basic life support techniques and appropriate automated external defibrillator use
  • Manage a casualty who is choking
  • Demonstrate post-resuscitation procedures
  • Carry out basic maintenance and troubleshoot problems with an automated external defibrillator
  • Understand the safe use of an automated external defibrillator

Delivery & Assessment:

This is practical course delivered over 5 contact hours.  It is assessed informally by the instructor during the course through a series of practical scenarios to develop skills and confidence.  We have sufficient AED training devices and CPR manikins to enable students to work in very small groups, thus maximising practise time. Learners are expected to undertake some self directed study by reading course materials.  Due to the practical nature of the course, Learners should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, e.g. trousers and flat footwear. As part of the registration process, Learners are also required to bring 2 forms of photographic ID with them to the first session.

During the course, you will attain the knowledge and practical competencies to manage a casualty who needs CPR and the safe use of AED. Competency in the necessary life-saving skills is assessed through 4 practical assessments:

  • CPR
  • Use of an AED
  • Recovery position
  • Choking

There is also a theory assessment for this course, consisting of 1 multiple choice question paper.  The minimum mark is 14/20 to be considered for an overall ‘pass’.

On successful completion of this course, Learners will receive a accredited certificate.  This is valid for 1 year and Leaners must retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date in order to remain qualified.

This qualification is based on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) training standard for delivery of First Aid at Work (FAW) courses for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and complies with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

Suitability

This qualification has been designed for those who have a specific interest or responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities to provide CPR when dealing with an emergency which may involve use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  There are no formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we recommend that Learners have a basic level of skill in Literacy and Numeracy.  The syllabus is suitable for those who may / may not have any previous first aid experience.

Accessibility

We aim to make sure all Learners have access to assessment and are given equal opportunities to demonstrate their competence.  Please bear in mind that Learners will need to demonstrate certain practical skills without assistance from a third party.  In some circumstances, it may be possible for reasonable adjustments to be made, however this is always subject to approval by the Awarding Organisation.  Further information about this is documented in our Equal Opportunities and Accessibility policies.

Prerequisites

Learners must be at least 16 years of age.  The role of a first aider can be physically demanding, candidates are reminded that they must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course outline.
